About Szeged
Szeged is the third-largest city of Hungary with a population of 160 000, the largest city and regional centre of the Southern Great Plain and the county seat of Csongrád-Csanád county. It is located at the merge of the rivers Tisza and Maros.
In the flood of 1879, medieval Szeged was almost completely destroyed; only 265 houses remained standing. It was rebuilt as a new, modern city, following a planned structure with wide boulevards.
How to get to Szeged
If you are travelling by car from Budapest, take the M5 motorway. Please note that the motorway is not toll-free; a 10-day vignette for a passenger car (category D1) costs 6,620 HUF (approximately 17 euros).
From Budapest Airport, take bus 200E to the city, getting off at either Ferihegy or Kőbánya-Kispest train station. Trains to the destination depart hourly, and the journey takes a little over two hours. It is recommended to purchase the more expensive "IC" (InterCity) ticket, which includes a reserved seat.
